Basics of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI)

Angela Caldwell, LMFT & Jessica Tang, LMFT

Therapists are reporting an alarming rise in cases of self-injury. Unfortunately, there is an abundance of confusing and misleading information that only makes it more difficult for clinicians to understand how to distinguish Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) from other clinical presentations. Therapists can better serve their clients if they can identify the typical clinical presentation of NSSI, understand the difference between borderline and non-borderline NSSI, and are up to date on what recent literature is saying about prevalence, correlations, and trends in NSSI. This presentation provides a sophisticated, clinical lens through which to understand the nature and etiology of this behavior, while offering recommendations on how to avoid common treatment failures and work effectively and confidently with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury when it shows up in the room.

Educational Goal:

This training will lay a foundation for understanding the basics of the self-injury population. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the typical clinical presentation of a non-suicidal self-injurer.
  2. Differentiate between non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal self-injury, as well as distinguish self-injury associated with borderline personality vs. non-borderline self-injury.
  3. List treatment recommendations supported by the evidence base.

Angela Caldwell, M.A., LMFT, is the founder and executive director of Self-Injury Institute (SII) and has been working with self-injurers and their families for over two decades. She is also the founder and director of Caldwell Family Institute where she specializes in family-based coaching. She can also be found teaching as an adjunct professor at California State, Northridge, or speaking all over the country on a broad range of topics, including building a family identity, parenting in the digital age, and understanding non-suicidal self-injury.

Jessica Tang, M.S., LMFT, is the Clinical Director of Self-Injury Institute and has been working with self-injurers and their families for a decade. In addition to the work she does at Self-Injury Institute, she brings her background in early childhood education and a multicultural lens to her own private practice in Los Angeles and as an adjunct professor and Course Lead at Pepperdine University’s School of Education and Psychology.
