Dr. Drea Letamendi, Ph.D.
Stories are a part of our psychological fabric, and the personal and emotionally charged connections we form with "faux friends" in film, TV, gaming, and comics can help harness essential insights. Dr. Letamendi will delve into the powerful phenomenon of "mediated others" and share how grit, emotional growth, and self-discovery are gained while facing multiple threats in today's world. The speaker will discuss how fiction and fandom in entertainment media can comfort anxieties, manage fears, and affirm hopes through healthy escapism, allowing our clients (and us) to flourish in times of crisis. Dr. Letamendi will provide participants with effective strategies for implementing compassionate self-care, cultivating belongingness, and increasing health consciousness for a happier and more fulfilling work-life identity. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Understand the benefits of media use related to emotional processing, self-awareness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
- Explain the parasocial engagement model and how personal development is influenced through storytelling.
- Identify 2 - 3 approaches that can be utilized to reduce the effects of trauma (war, global, pandemic, vicarious trauma, etc.) through a shared, collective liberation model.
Dr. Drea Letamendi, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist, trainer,
performance coach, and entertainment media consultant. Dr. Letamendi currently serves as the Director of Resilience at UCLA, where she works in the areas of empathy and resilience building, crisis-response, and suicide prevention. Dr. Drea is a TEDx speaker, the designated psychological consultant for the media companies Fandom and Screen Junkies, and has published several articles about the psychology of characters in Marvel, DC, and other pop culture franchises. Her work on the intersections of pop culture and psychological science have been featured in the Atlantic, the Guardian, Vanity Fair, the Los Angeles Times, and on Disney+.

CAMFT Approved Continuing Education Provider 59450.
