Narcissist: The Skilled Abuser
How Personality Disorders Affect The Family System

Catherine Barrett, Psy.D.

Exposure to a family member with Narcissistic Personality Disorder can cause severe emotional distress and disrupt the psychological equilibrium within the family system. This experiential presentation is intended to provide clinicians with a practical application beyond the standard interpretation of NPD within a familial context. The facilitator will provide guidelines to assist in identifying survivors of abuse, complex post traumatic stress, and the effects of a relationship with a narcissistic loved one. This information will help clinicians to orient the family dynamic as a way to support healing and improve interpersonal functioning.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Conceptualize the underlying components and organization of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
  2. Utilize 3 ways to help clients manage narcissistic personalities in their family when contact is unavoidable
  3. Identify 3 developmental problems associated with a child surviving a narcissistic parent

Catherine Barrett, Psy.D.is a licensed Clinical Forensic Psychologist who specializes in narcissistic abuse recovery. Her background includes working with marginalized communities, social justice advocacy, and the assessment and treatment of sex offenders with personality disorders.
