Narcissist: The Skilled Abuser
How Personality Disorders Affect The Family System
Catherine Barrett, Psy.D.
Exposure to a family member with Narcissistic Personality Disorder can cause severe emotional distress and disrupt the psychological equilibrium within the family system. This experiential presentation is intended to provide clinicians with a practical application beyond the standard interpretation of NPD within a familial context. The facilitator will provide guidelines to assist in identifying survivors of abuse, complex post traumatic stress, and the effects of a relationship with a narcissistic loved one. This information will help clinicians to orient the family dynamic as a way to support healing and improve interpersonal functioning.
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Conceptualize the underlying components and organization of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
- Utilize 3 ways to help clients manage narcissistic personalities in their family when contact is unavoidable
- Identify 3 developmental problems associated with a child surviving a narcissistic parent
