Our Relationship with Technology:
The Consequences of Too Much Screen Time
and What Therapists Can Do

Holli Kenley, MA, LMFT

Studies show electronic screen activity can have unwanted effects on the behavior and moods of individuals of all ages and can negatively influence important relationships. These effects impact children and young people more intensely. Many parents are unsure about what to do.  Based on current research, this presentation will examine relevant clinical vocabulary with a therapeutic introduction into the consequences of electronic consumption. Moving towards a more balanced relationship with technology, this presentation will preview a Triage Approach, focusing on the first corrective response: Preparation and Protection.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify presenting pathology and symptomology related to screen-saturated lives.
  2. Describe at least two of the most common effects of interactive and passive screen time.
  3. Discuss at least three interventions for a corrective response to problematic effects of technology over-consumption.

Holli Kenley, MA, LMFT, holds a master’s degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. In addition to working in the field of psychology as an author, speaker, workshop presenter, Kenley maintains a clinical private practice in Rancho Mirage, CA. She is the author of eight recovery books.
