The Moveable Genogram: A Powerful Tool for Transforming Relationships

Karen Cohen, MS, LMFT

The Moveable Genogram is a Gestalt-based technique that vividly brings to life what a conventional, static genogram illustrates on paper. The client's active participation provides an immediate and impactful experience of the contrast between what once was with what is possible now.

In this experiential presentation, Karen Cohen will demonstrate how therapists can use the genogram to safely guide clients in a two step process - first, to identify their habitual and problematic family-of-origin relationship patterns and second, to restructure these patterned behaviors in order to transform their current relationships with partners and children.

Network event participants will learn:

  • Basic Gestalt theory underlying the Moveable Genogram
  • How to assess whether this technique appropriately targets relationship issues of our clients
  • When and how to integrate the Moveable Genogram into our therapeutic style
