Creating Closeness at a Distance: Depth Emotion Processing and Telemedicine

Susan Warren Warshow, LCSW, LMFT

The emergent modality of telemedicine, or e-therapy, remains controversial, particularly for serious conditions. Therapists who responded to an informal inquiry believe e-therapy is inadvisable for clients with attachment trauma. These respondents expressed fears about decompensation and containment of their clients. Ms. Warshow has safely and successfully helped clients to integrate intense trauma-related emotions while accurately attuning to the subtle emotional and physiological cues that can be detected in an online medium. She will also discuss how to prepare ourselves and our clients to better tolerate the technical difficulties that can occur with online therapy.

In addition, the principles of Dynamic Emotion Focused Therapy (DEFT), a shame sensitive, somatic and emotion-focused model, will be highlighted. The important legal and ethical issues concerning telemedicine will not be a part of this presentation.
