A BBS-Required, 6-Hour Training for Psychotherapists
in Client Assessment, Intervention and Follow-Up

Curt Widhalm, LMFT

Therapists will encounter clients who express suicidal ideation and attempt acts of suicide at some point or another in their career. This course will cover risk factors, suicidal treatment plans and interventions, cultural considerations, and legal and ethical obligations for therapists in navigating these situations. Current research will be discussed on the efficacy of standard best practice assessments and interventions, ranging from intake assessments to post-crisis follow-up.

Learning Objectives:
After the workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Describe four preventive factors for suicide
  2. Identify four risk factors for suicide
  3. Identify 3 legal and ethical responsibilities when clients present with suicidal ideation
  4. List the 8 phases in the continuum of suicidal ideation
  5. Develop a comprehensive 5-point safety plan.

    Curt Widhalm, LMFT practices in West LA & Encino working with adolescents and certified in EMDR. Curt is on the CAMFT Ethics Committee, an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University and lecturer at California State University Northridge, co-host of The Modern Therapist’s Survival Guide podcast, and co-founder of the Therapy Reimagined Conference.
