Cultivating Humility:
Dismantling Implicit Bias and Building Allies in Therapy
Dr. Sayida Peprah and Susan Lowe, LMFT
Unconscious associations of selective attributes can influence perceptions and unintentionally affect the therapeutic alliance. This interactive and self-reflective presentation is intended to increase cultural humility, broaden self-awareness of implicit bias, and provide tools to encourage understanding and empathy. The facilitators will provide guidelines to assist in mitigating implicit biases in mental health as a strategy to improve therapeutic relationships and quality of care.
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Define and identify the impact of implicit bias in the therapeutic relationship
- Identify and use strategies for dismantling and/or reducing implicit bias
