    Healing Trauma:
The Pathway to Authenticity and Authentic Connections

    Dr. Barbara Nosal, LMFT, LADC

This presentation incorporates attachment and family systems theories to demonstrate how multigenerational transmission, attachment styles and early childhood attachment ruptures, form the sense of self, impact functioning, and create life-long relational and emotional patterns. Strategies to heal relational and transgenerational trauma, whether working with individuals, couples or families, include healing from the past and identifying trauma triggers in the present.  Removing these barriers frees one from their past, allowing the authentic self to emerge, and to develop authentic connections with others.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
    1. Identify when emotional reactivity is triggered from unresolved childhood trauma.
    2. Describe how childhood attachment styles and ruptures influence life-long relational and emotional patterns.
    3. Remove the barriers that prevent creating an authentic connection with others.

Dr. Barbara Nosal, LMFT, LADC, has worked in the mental health and addiction treatment field with adolescents and their families for over 20 years. She has held managerial and clinical positions in a variety of treatment settings with a private practice in Newport Beach. She holds a doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology and dual master’s degrees in human services and counseling psychology. Dr. Nosal is the founding Clinical Director and Chief Clinical Officer at Newport Academy, where she oversees the treatment of adolescents, ages 12-20, and their families in residential and outpatient programs.

    Exploring the Influence of
    LGBTQ Intersectionality in Therapy

The intersection of sexual orientation and/or gender identity with other social statuses—such as age, race, ethnicity, culture, and religion present unique challenges that impact LGBTQIA+ clients' experiences in therapy. This presentation will help us identify and understand these challenges, and how therapists can apply this critically important information to provide more effective assessment and psychotherapy with LGBTQIA+ clients. It will also bring into focus the importance of developing new strategies and skills as well as the demand for required continued learning and personal development.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Identify skills needed for working with LGBTQIA+ populations.
    2. Identify relevant ethical issues related to LGBTQIA+ populations.
    3. Recognize intersectionality issues and describe how to apply these issues in therapy with LGBTQIA+ populations.

      Working with Families:
A Collaborative, Empowering, and Shame-Proof Approach

      Presented by
      Mercedes Samudio, LCSW, Parenting Coach

With judgmental stares, off-hand comments, and outright intervention, our society shames parents, who are simply trying their best to raise children. In bearing that burden, parents pass the shame onto their own children. It’s time to help parents stop shaming each other. Working with families produces its own unique brand of clinical skills and is very different than working with individuals. Families are a unique system that can be complicated and trying to keep all members engaged during treatment can be trying. In this presentation, clinicians will learn strategies that can help bypass the challenges and barriers in working within the family system, and in turn be more effective in supporting the family through treatment.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

      1. Discuss family systems, family therapy modalities and interventions.
      2. Explore how to develop a healthy therapeutic relationship with family.
      3. Assess the family’s needs to create a treatment plan and goals.

      About Mercedes Samudio

Mercedes Samudio, LCSW is a parent coach, speaker, bestselling author and founder of the Diversity in Parenting Conference. Mercedes helps parents and children improve communication, manage emotional trauma, navigate social media and technology together, and develop healthy parent-child relationships. As an LCSW and parenting expert with a private coaching practice, Mercedes has worked with adoptive families, foster families, teen parents, parents navigating the child protective services system, and children living with mental illness. Mercedes seeks to empower parents to believe that they are already great guides for raising healthy and happy children. To learn more, please visit:   http://shameproofparenting.com.
