Hurts So Good: How Reality TV Shows Skew Our Clients’ Perception of Healthy Romantic and Sexual Relationships
Amanda Lopez-Martinez, ALMFT
Who doesn’t enjoy some easy entertainment at the end of a long day? The reality TV space is swimming with relationship-centered programming such as The Bachelor, Vanderpump Rules, 90-Day Fiancé, and so many more. "Hurts So Good" takes a critical look at these popular reality TV shows and discusses how they can skew what clients perceive as “healthy” romantic and sexual relationships. Clinicians will be able to identify how this sneaks up during sessions, and ways to challenge these thoughts in the therapeutic space, as well as how to cultivate room for a discussion about sex, relationships, and media in 2024.
Educational Goal:
This workshop will identify themes and messaging from reality shows, and the implications these themes have on our clients’ understanding of dating culture and sexual relationships. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 significant themes in reality television that skew the way clients understand and perceive “healthy” romantic and sexual relationships.
- Utilize 3 strategies for addressing these perceptions in clinical work.
- Challenge a client’s perceptions and provide alternative views of dating and sex stemming from themes reinforced by reality TV that clients can integrate into their relational and sexual exploration.
Amanda Lopez-Martinez, ALMFT, is a relationship and sex therapist in Chicago, Illinois. She received her master’s degree from Northwestern University, where in her downtime, she enjoyed applying the concepts she was learning to her favorite reality dating show: The Bachelor. Amanda developed a special interest in working with emerging adults and navigating modern, dating culture after reentering the dating scene during COVID. She now specializes in working with folks learning about dating, their dating styles, and maneuvering relationship transitions. She enjoys working with ethically non-monogamous couples, Latine couples and individuals, and pre-marital folks as well.
