Brainspotting:  Where You Look Affects How You Feel

Brainspotting Los Angeles:
Maria Gray, LMFT, NMP, CGP
Claudia Lewis, LMFT,

and Andrew Susskind, LCSW, SEP, CGP

When integrating somatic therapies into historically thought-and-feeling-focused psychotherapies, the mind-body connection encourages therapists to ask questions such as, “What’s happening in your body right now?” or “What do you notice physically?” These inquiries build somatic awareness in our clients as they identify when they are regulated or dysregulated. Talk therapy engages the neocortex – our thinking, conscious brain – while Brainspotting accesses the subcortical system where trauma and distress are often stored. Participants will learn how neuroscience reveals that unpleasant, painful memories often get stuck in the non-verbal, non-cognitive subcortical brain which diminishes our ability to live fully in the here and now. As a result, some people experience anxiety, depression or just the sense of not feeling like themselves. Participants will have an introductory understanding of Brainspotting techniques and how it can help clients process unresolved trauma.

After this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe a “Brainspot” and identify a SUDS (Subjective Units of Distress) level with clients
  2. Name the two components of dual attunement present in Brainspotting
