Escaping Blame:  Helping High-Conflict Couples Develop Account-ability

Larry Zucker, LCSW

High-conflict couples are incredible trainers for therapists interested in any kind of relational work, be it with couples, individuals, or families. We want to develop the skills to harness that fighting energy so that battling partners are fighting for their dreamed-of relationship, rather than with each other. This presentation will provide specific tools for eliciting such a turn, helping you overcome any apprehensions of working with volatile couples . . . and may even leave you looking forward to sessions with them!

After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Develop a clear map of their role with a contentious couple, learning to spot and decline invitations into other problematic roles.
  2. Identify the distinction between debate & conversation, interrupt debate before it escalates and support the gradual development of dialogical skill.
  3. Utilize a line of inquiry with high-conflict couples, shifting the conversation from reciprocal accusation and finger-pointing to mutual inquiry about the relationship.

Larry Zucker, LCSW, has been working with individuals, couples, and families at Larchmont Associates since 1992. He received his MSW from Boston University, followed by three years of post-graduate training in couple and family therapy at the Kantor Family Institute. He trained family therapists for many years, currently with the Southern California Counseling Center and as adjunct faculty at Antioch University, Los Angeles. He is a clinical member and Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
