The Violet Oaklander Model of Therapy with Children:
How to Quickly and Effectively Engage Kids in Therapy
Karen Fried, Psy.D., LMFT
The Purpose of a First Session with Children…is for them to Want to have a Second Session.
When Violet Oaklander wrote her first book, Windows to Our Children, she contemplated using the title “What to do With the Kid in the Room.” By integrating Gestalt theory and Play Therapy techniques, The Oaklander Model gives therapists many tools. Using projection and metaphor to strengthen a child’s sense of self, this approach is effective with a variety of behaviors and symptoms, particularly those related to anger, abuse, and trauma affecting healthy growth in children. Presentation will include a brief overview of the Oaklander model, providing a hands-on experiential exercise with a live demonstration.
After this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Explain a general understanding of the theory and practice of the Oaklander model.
- Utilize an experiential exercise with a child client.
- Demonstrate to colleagues how to work with the model
